MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR
I began playing guitar at the age of 13. I very quickly fell in love with the instrument and decided this was what I wanted to do. I studied music at northern Virginia Community College and then went off to Hollywood California to study at the world famous Musicians Institute. Right after music school I began teaching. I have been teaching for 23 years now and am very comfortable teaching all levels and styles of guitar as well as beginner to intermediate level ukulele and bass.
I have also performed with various bands of many genres throughout Virginia. This included my own band in the early 2000’s, in which we were lucky enough to open up for some of my musical heroes. I am currently playing in a party/wedding band called Cake Fight. I also sing and perform solo, often accompanied by backing tracks that I create. I'm passionate about teaching music and believe that the arts are a vital part of living a full life.
Whether you're looking for an enriching activity for your son or daughter, or are looking to cultivate a new and rewarding hobby for yourself, I can help you reach your goals, become a better musician, and make music a part of your daily life. Let's make some music together!

Why Take Lessons at DeTroia Music Studio?
There are a lot of ways to learn music. And there are a lot of free resources available to aspiring musicians today. But there are some things YouTube just can't teach you.
I can't tell you how many students have come to me struggling with their instrument because no one ever helped them with basic things like how to hold the guitar or proper left-hand technique. It can be frustrating and make you feel like you've hit a wall. Making music is hard work, but it should also be a fun and rewarding experience.
One-on-one instruction, whether in-person or over Zoom, gives you personal feedback and individualized coaching that will help you form good habits from the beginning.
Whether you are just starting out, or looking to refine your skills, I can help you reach your goals and be the musician you want to be.
TESTIMONIALS

Carl DeTroia was not only an exceptional guitar teacher, he was a fabulous musical mentor for my son. My son started taking lessons from Carl around the age of 12 until 17-18.
He not only turned my son into a guitarist, but a true musician. His laidback style and easy going manner are nice for kids who may be shy.
He is kind and patient. He has had a lasting influence on my son. My husband and I think the world of Carl.

After 20 years of playing, I needed a teacher who knew classical pieces and could push me. I jokingly told Carl my dream was to play professionally at Carnegie Hall. Two years later, I can now play scores that I thought were way above my ability.
But that's not the only reason I recommend Carl. I'm the father of a 18 year old special needs child, Noah. Noah often picks up one of my old guitars and plays “air guitar.” I asked Carl to teach Noah. They've been working together for a few months now. Carl is able to hold Noah’s attention and he sings as Carl and he play. This not only requires talent, but patience and a very good sense of humor.
Carl can teach the most accomplished musician and a beginner. His dedication to teaching, joy, and his love of music make him an ideal candidate for a music teacher.

After years of on and off playing and being stuck in that simple chord progression purgatory, I decided to try private lessons in the hopes of getting to that next level. It was the BEST thing I ever did!!
I started lessons with Carl about a year ago. From the very beginning, Carl made me feel comfortable and really helped to reignite that spark that made me want to play guitar in the first place. He developed a lesson plan specifically for me based on my skill level and my desired goal of learning how to improvise and play along with any song.
Carl has taught me so much about theory, technique, and style in such a short period of time and I couldn’t be happier! My only regret at this point is I wish I had met Carl years ago!
